Illinois NON-CDL Class C — Exam Facts
What is a Class C License?
A Class C license allows you to operate any motor vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 16,000 pounds but less than 26,001 pounds. This is a NON-CDL classification — you do not need a Commercial Driver's License for these vehicles.
The Written Exam

Class C vs. CDL
A CDL (Commercial Driver's License) is required for vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 lbs or more, combination vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001+ lbs (where towed vehicle exceeds 10,000 lbs), vehicles carrying 16+ passengers, or vehicles placarded for hazardous materials. Class C covers the range between standard passenger vehicles (Class D) and CDL-required vehicles.
Illinois License Classes
- Class D: 16,000 lbs or less — standard driver's license
- Class C: Over 16,000 lbs, under 26,001 lbs — NON-CDL
- Class B: 26,001+ lbs single vehicle — CDL required
- Class A: 26,001+ lbs combination — CDL required
- Class L: Motor-driven cycle under 150cc
- Class M: Motorcycle or motor-driven cycle
